Multi-purpose adhesive sealant with a wide adhesion range Sikaflex®-221 is a multi-purpose 1-component polyurethane adhesive / sealant that bonds well to a wide variety of substrates like metals, metal primers and paint coatings (2-component systems), ceramic materials and plastics. It is suitable for making permanent elastic seals. Suitable substrate materials are metals, metal primers and paint coatings (2-component systems), ceramic materials and plastics. It is ideally used for internal sealing and simple bonding applications. Seek manufacturer’s advice and perform tests on original substrates before using Sikaflex®-221 on materials prone to stress cracking. This product is suitable for experienced professional users only. Test with actual substrates and conditions have to be performed to ensure adhesion and material compatibility. Surface preparation Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from grease, oil and dust. Surface treatment depends on the specific nature of the substrates and is crucial for a long lasting bond. Suggestions for surface preparation may be found on the current edition of the appropriate Sika® Pre-Treatment Chart. Consider that these suggestions are based on experience and have in any case to be verified by tests on original substrates. Application Sikaflex®-221 can be processed between 5 °C and 40 °C but changes in reactivity and application properties have to be considered. The optimum temperature for substrate and sealant is between 15 °C and 25 °C. Sikaflex®-221 can be processed with hand, pneumatic or electric driven piston guns as well as pump equipment. For advice on selecting and setting up a suitable pump system, contact the System Engineering Department of Sika Industry. Tooling and finishing Tooling and finishing must be carried out within the skin time of the sealant. It is recommended using Sika® Tooling Agent N. Other finishing agents must be tested for suitability and compatibility prior the use. Removal Uncured Sikaflex®-221 can be removed from tools and equipment with Sika® Remover-208 or another suitable solvent. Once cured, the material can only be removed mechanically. Hands and exposed skin have to be washed immediately using hand wipes such as Sika® Cleaner-350H or a suitable industrial hand cleaner and water. Do not use solvents on skin. Overpainting Sikaflex®-221 can be painted after formation of a skin. If the paint requires a baking process, best performance is achieved by allowing the sealant to fully cure first. 1C-PUR and 2C-acrylic based paints are usually suitable. All paints have to be tested by carrying preliminary trials under manufacturing conditions. The elasticity of paints is usually lower than of sealants what could lead to cracking of the paint film in the joint area.

Smooth off using a spatula dipped in turps, within 5 minutes of applying. If painting, paint with two coats of a quality water-based exterior paint. Storage and re-use Store in cool, dry conditions below 30°C. Use within 6 months of opening. Clean up Clean up with turps before Storm cures. The cured sealant can be removed by scraping or sanding or with the help of Selleys Silicone Remover. Handy Hints For neater joints, mask sides before applying sealant and remove the tape before sealant skins. Paint with water-based paint. If the paint does not wet out sealant surface properly, lightly sand sealant before painting. For best results roughen bond area prior to cleaning. Cut off required amount. Replace disc on the remaining portion. Wear gloves to avoid messing hands. To mix, knead with fingers to a uniform colour. If mixing is difficult, warm to room temperature. Apply to surface to be repaired (within 12 minutes of mixing) and work the material forcefully into the surface applying pressure until adhesion begins to take effect. Mould to shape if required. If material sticks to fingers, use the plastic wrapper to press the material in place. For a smooth appearance, remove excess and hand rub with water or damp cloth before hardening begins. Trim away any excess before initial hardening. Remove any residues with acetone prior to initial hardening. Hardened excess may be sanded or trimmed away once fully cured. After 20-30 minutes Knead-It Aqua will harden and begin to form a strong bond. Allow for longer cure times at lower temperatures. After 60 minutes Knead-It Aqua may be drilled, sanded, machined, filed, sawed or painted. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after use. Handy tips Ensure the putty and hardener are mixed properly. Knead-It will become warm as it is mixed, A good indication its mixed properly is when you have a uniform colour and feel a mild heat radiating from the knead-it. To help determine when your knead it has set, keep a small piece off to check- when it is hard, it indicates your job is done. For best results, use Knead-It Multi-Purpose for applications in contact with drinking water. Use Knead-It Steel for applications on metal or fuel contact Store in a cool place for maximum shelf life For cleaning surfaces prior to application of adhesive, if the surface is porous, we would recommend using SELLEYS Liquid Sugar Soap. If the surface is non-porous eg glass or metal, firstly clean the surface with mineral turpentine and then again with methylated spirits. If there is old, difficult to remove residue such as old paint, we recommend using paint stripper such as SELLEYS Kwik Strip Smart. Ensure the surface is dry before applying the product. Keep a canister of SELLEYS Sugar Soap Wipes nearby for a quick and effective cleanup. Safety tips Where possible wear protective gloves when using Knead-It Aqua. Contact with skin may result in irritation. Epoxy resin is a known skin sensitiser. Repeated or prolonged skin contact may lead to allergic contact dermatitis. If redness or swelling of skin occurs, wash thoroughly with soap and water. Seek medical attention if in any doubt. Mixed and cured material is not hazardous. Cured material can only be removed by cutting and abrasion. If cured on skin, it will peel off in a few days without assistance. Soaking in warm water will assist removal. Storage and re-use Replace siliver disc to seal ends and keep in a cool dry place.

Prepare your surfaces: All surfaces must be clean, dust free and tight fitting. For shiny surfaces, such as metals, glass and some plastics, roughen up the material to give the glue something to bite into. Damp It: Lightly dampen one surface with water. We recommend using a damp cloth or spraying with water. Do not saturate the surface. For dense hardwoods, lightly dampen both surfaces prior to gluing. Evenly Apply Gorilla Glue Onto the Dry Surface Glue It: Carefully apply onto the dry surface. Do not over apply. We recommend wearing gloves or spreading the glue with a disposable brush. In some instances, Gorilla Glue can be a skin sensitizer. If you are predisposed to skin reactions, please take the extra precaution. If you do get the glue on your skin, try removing it with a dry cloth or paper towel first (particularly if the glue is still tacky). If that doesn’t work, try washing with soap and cold water, or using an exfoliator with a gritty texture. Dry your skin and apply lotion. We do not recommend using any kind of alcohol or acetone. This actually strips the skin of its natural oils, which means the glue is more likely to stick. Clamp the Two Surfaces Together Tightly Clamp It: Make sure the clamping pressure is distributed evenly across the surface. Or, if you don’t have a clamp, use heavy objects or Gorilla Tape® to achieve the appropriate clamping pressure. For lighter objects, try using rubber bands to hold the pieces together tightly. Clamp objects for 1–2 hours. For best results, allow 24 hours to cure. Clean up If you need to remove any uncured “squeeze out” or wet glue, we recommend wiping with a dry cloth or using a standard paint thinner. Make sure to read and follow directions if using a paint thinner. Always wear gloves. Once the glue is dry, it is best removed mechanically: Try sanding, chiselling, scraping or picking.
