End grain gluing Craftwork Cloth Paper Mosaics Leather Other craft materials How to use this product Surfaces to be bonded must be close fitting, free from dust, dry and clean from grease. Shake bottle before use Apply adhesive liberally to one surface only, position surfaces and press together while still wet. Immediately clamp for 30 minutes for softwoods and 1 hour for hardwoods. Alternatively, low clamping pressures (50lbs/in2) can be used with softwoods; higher pressures are recommended for hardwoods (100 – 150lbs/in2). Do not stress joint for 12 hours. Wipe off excess adhesive while still wet with a damp cloth. If the wood is to be stained, any residual Aquadhere left on the timber surface may prevent the stain from taking to the wood. Maximum strength is achieved after 12 hours, but longer in cold, damp conditions, or when used on dense timbers. Cure slows significantly in humid, cold conditions. Clean all tools with water before adhesive is allowed to dry. If dry, soak in water until adhesive is soft. Handy tips 1L covers approx. 8m2 To fill small gaps, Aquadhere can be mixed with sawdust. Longer clamping times may be required for joints under high stress, or alternatively use Selleys 308 High Stress Wood Glue. Avoid contaminating Aquadhere with iron and steel, eg nails, etc. Aquadhere contaminated with rust (iron oxide) will stain brown/black in the presence of tannins in many woods. On very porous surfaces applying a thin layer to each side and allowing to soaking in before applying a second layer to one side only may result in a stronger bond Cured adhesive can be resoftened by prolonged contact with hot water or steam. Sanding isn’t an effective way to prepare for gluing, as it often leaves an uneven surface and may clog the timber which can stop the glue from penetrating and impact on your result. A straight router can be used to trim the edge, but be sure to only remove as much as required to obtain a suitable edge for gluing. If you are gluing over a larger surface, try using a small roller to aid in application. For cleaning surfaces prior to application of adhesive, if the surface is porous, we would recommend using SELLEYS Liquid Sugar Soap. If the surface is non-porous eg glass or metal, firstly clean the surface with mineral turpentine and then again with methylated spirits. If there is old, difficult to remove residue such as old paint, we recommend using paint stripper such as SELLEYS Kwik Strip Smart. Ensure the surface is dry before applying the product. Keep a canister of SELLEYS Sugar Soap Wipes nearby for a quick and effective cleanup. Safety tips Aquadhere is considered a non-hazardous material. Flooring Preparing old floors: Scrape all dust and waste between boards and surface as well as from knot holes and nail heads, vacuum well and carry out first sanding to prepare for filling and coating. Ensure that floor is stabilised, dry and free of movement. Application new floors and prepared old floors: Fill cracks, knot and nail holes and all blemished with a putty knife. Fill deeper holes in layers of about 6mm allowing each fill to dry. Apply TIMBERMATE to the entire floor, as a sealant, using a squeegee, trowel or paint roller. Allow to dry and sand off with a fine paper - 120 to 150 grit is recommended for best results. The floor can now be stained or varnished. Frequently Asked Questions Question: Is TIMBERMATE toxic, flammable or harmful? Answer: It is advisable to carry out safe work practices, as you would when working with dust. (Use an approved dust mask and safety goggles). TIMBERMATE contains no harmful ingredients and is non-flammable. Question: Can TIMBERMATE be used externally? Question: Can TIMBERMATE be grainfilled? Answer: Yes, TIMBERMATE is a non-solvent based filler and is ideal for grainfilling. Mix 10-15% hot water to thin the Timbermate, then rub over the grain or spread thinly (see below for more detailed instructions). TIMBERMATE will: *Not raise the grain *Not damage the grain TIMBERMATE is: *Easy to sand when dry *Easy to stain when dry *Heat proof so you can speed the drying time by heating with a hair dryer, heat gun, lights etc. Question: How is the grainfiller applied? Answer: Take some TIMBERMATE out of the tub and place it in a separate container. Add approximately 10-15% water, (1gm=1ml) and mix into a slurry like paste (like toothpaste). Use a LINT FREE CLOTH AND RUB ACROSS THE GRAIN. When grainfiller goes "whitish" and sands off easily like talc powder, it is dry. TIMBERMATE will not blind the sandpaper (ie. clog up). If sandpaper gets clogged the grainfiller is not dry. Sand off in the same direction as the grain. Stain or coat when dry. Question: When is the stain applied? Answer: You can stain before or after applying TIMBERMATE (see "How do I match colours"). Question: How are the colours matched? Answer: Colour matching is easy. You can do it either of the following ways: Add your colourant to the putty and match the exact colour whilst wet. TIMBERMATE will dry lighter, but coat back to its original wet colour once coated with clear finishes. The final result is what you see (wet) is what you get. You can stain TIMBERMATE once it is dry. To test if dry, just rub sandpaper over putty. If putty clogs the sandpaper the filler is still wet. Wait for TIMBERMATE to dry and then stain. Question: How long does TIMBERMATE take to dry? Answer: Depending on the weather and depth of fill, TIMBERMATE will dry as follows: In hot weather, TIMBERMATE dries quicker. In cold weather, the depth of fill will determine the drying time. You can speed up the drying time by using a heat gun, hair dryer or light. Question: What depth or width can be filled? Answer: Do not fill holes deeper than 6-8mm at a time. TIMBERMATE dries quicker when filled in layers. Allow TIMBERMATE to dry between layers. Question: Why is the tub hard some days and feels dry and soft on other days? Answer: TIMBERMATE is waterbased. It contains no harmful solvents or acrylics and is, therefore, temperature sensitive. The warmer the weather or environment the softer the putty. On hot days it will start to dry in the tub if not properly sealed. Add a few drops of water to re moisten. Question: How is TIMBERMATE softened? Answer: Add a few drops of warm water to the top of the tub. It will soften quite quickly. If tub is frozen, thaw out by standing tub in a tub of hot water or place in a microwave for 20 seconds. TIMBERMATE is freeze thaw stable. Question: Can TIMBERMATE be used for any other purpose other than wood repair? Answer: TIMBERMATE does not shrink, sink, crack or fallout and can, therefore, be used on Plasterboard, Masonry, Fibreglass, Plastic and any other surface. Bearing in mind that steel must be coated with a primer to avoid rusting. Question: Can TIMBERMATE go off or does it have a shelf life? Answer: TIMBERMATE has an unlimited shelf life and will last indefinitely. If contents become dry merely add a few drops of water to reconstitute. DO NOT add more water than is necessary or leave excess water in the tub for a long period of time. Cut the seal and nozzle, fit it to the top of the cartridge, and insert the cartridge into a caulking gun such as Selleys Light Speed Caulking Gun. Hold the caulking gun at a 45° angle and apply, forcing the product into the gap. Smooth with a wet finger or spatula. Clean up excess with a damp cloth immediately and clean hands and tools with water. Allow surface to skin thoroughly prior to painting with water-based paints. If using oil-based paints or for large gaps, allow the sealant to set for about 24 hours and ensure the product is completely cured. Avoid water contact until fully cured – 72 hours or longer in cold weather. Limitations Not recommended for foot traffic areas, gaps between tongue and groove boards, or weatherboard overlaps. Suitable substrate materials are metals, metal primers and paint coatings (2-component systems), ceramic materials and plastics. It is ideally used for internal sealing and simple bonding applications. Seek manufacturer’s advice and perform tests on original substrates before using Sikaflex®-221 on materials prone to stress cracking. This product is suitable for experienced professional users only. Test with actual substrates and conditions have to be performed to ensure adhesion and material compatibility. Surface preparation Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from grease, oil and dust. Surface treatment depends on the specific nature of the substrates and is crucial for a long lasting bond. Suggestions for surface preparation may be found on the current edition of the appropriate Sika® Pre-Treatment Chart. Consider that these suggestions are based on experience and have in any case to be verified by tests on original substrates. Application Sikaflex®-221 can be processed between 5 °C and 40 °C but changes in reactivity and application properties have to be considered. The optimum temperature for substrate and sealant is between 15 °C and 25 °C. Sikaflex®-221 can be processed with hand, pneumatic or electric driven piston guns as well as pump equipment. For advice on selecting and setting up a suitable pump system, contact the System Engineering Department of Sika Industry. Tooling and finishing Tooling and finishing must be carried out within the skin time of the sealant. It is recommended using Sika® Tooling Agent N. Other finishing agents must be tested for suitability and compatibility prior the use. Removal Uncured Sikaflex®-221 can be removed from tools and equipment with Sika® Remover-208 or another suitable solvent. Once cured, the material can only be removed mechanically. Hands and exposed skin have to be washed immediately using hand wipes such as Sika® Cleaner-350H or a suitable industrial hand cleaner and water. Do not use solvents on skin. Overpainting Sikaflex®-221 can be painted after formation of a skin. If the paint requires a baking process, best performance is achieved by allowing the sealant to fully cure first. 1C-PUR and 2C-acrylic based paints are usually suitable. All paints have to be tested by carrying preliminary trials under manufacturing conditions. The elasticity of paints is usually lower than of sealants what could lead to cracking of the paint film in the joint area.

For optimum adhesion and critical, high performance applications the following priming and/or pre-treatment procedures shall be followed: Non-porous substrates Aluminium, anodised aluminium, stainless steel, galvanised steel, powder coated metals or glazed tiles, slightly roughen surface with a fine abrasive pad. Clean and pre-treat using Sika® Aktivator-205 applied with a clean cloth. Before bonding / sealing, allow a waiting time of > 15 minutes (< 6 hours). Cut cartridge tip, fit to the nozzle and cut to size (5mm), then place in the caulking gun. Apply with the caulking gun, pushing sealant into joint or gaps. Smooth off using a spatula dipped in turps, within 5 minutes of applying. If painting, paint with two coats of a quality water-based exterior paint. Storage and re-use Store in cool, dry conditions below 30°C. Use within 6 months of opening. Clean up Clean up with turps before Storm cures. The cured sealant can be removed by scraping or sanding or with the help of Selleys Silicone Remover. Handy Hints For neater joints, mask sides before applying sealant and remove the tape before sealant skins. Paint with water-based paint. If the paint does not wet out sealant surface properly, lightly sand sealant before painting. Limitations Not suitable for PE, PP, PTFE, permanent water immersion or plugging leaks subject to pressure. Safety tips Cure excess product before disposal. Avoid skin and eye contact and inhalation of vapour. If in eyes, wash out immediately with water. If skin contact occurs, wipe off immediately and wash with running water. Selleys Special Putty is a Linseed oil based, knife grade putty available in a natural colour. Features Easy to use. What materials is this putty suitable for? Wood Timber How to use this product Rebates and grooves should be rigid, free from distortion, true and square, and should be clean, dry and unobstructed before glazing. Rebates and grooves should be of a size which allows adequate edge cover and putty volume. Minimum bed putty – 2mm, minimum front putty – 4mm where timber beads are used, and 2mm bed putty and 12mm front putty where no glazing beads are used. Depth of rebate: 10mm for 3-4mm glass, 15mm for 5-8mm glass. Two coats of good quality house paint should be applied not less than 2 weeks and not more than 4 weeks after completion of glazing. Paint should be carried out 2mm above the top line of the putty. Handy tips Do not use kerosene, turps or other material to aid in working the putty Allow putty to skin before applying paint Product can be applied by hand or with a putty knife. Add a few drops of linseed oil on the hands or knife to make for easier working Putty can thicken in cold weather. Warming the putty by working it in the hands before the application will soften it. Putty must be painted in exterior applications. High humidity, cold weather and use in interior applications can extend skinning times. Putty can separate on prolonged standing. If excessive oil is observed on the surface try to work the entire mixture together to redistribute the oil.
