Description
Gripset Betta Damp Stop is a one-part waterproofing primer and protective coating that helps hold back rising damp and moisture vapour moving through concrete, masonry and other porous mineral surfaces, supplied here in a 1L size. It suits renovators, tradies and confident DIYers who need a straightforward damp barrier under floor finishes, membranes and adhesives without mixing two parts together.
About the formula
Damp Stop is a single-component, moisture-curing liquid in a light yellow colour. Because there is nothing to mix, you avoid the wasted product and short pot life that come with two-part epoxy primers. It is solvent free and odourless, so it can be used in confined areas. Once it has dried, it can be overcoated with other paints, coatings and adhesives. It also works as a dust-binding treatment for aged cement floors and dusty screeds.
Where to use it
Indoors: sealing the inside faces of cellar and basement walls against moisture vapour and dampness, priming floors ahead of membranes or finishes, protecting timber flooring, carpet and vinyl from rising damp, and stabilising dusty or aged screeds before floor finishes go down.
Outdoors: priming external floors before a membrane is applied, and sealing the inner face of underground walls against residual moisture. The manufacturer lists it as suitable for internal, external, underground and immersed applications, and for resisting negative hydrostatic pressure.
Suitable surfaces include concrete, cement mortar, renders and screeds, concrete and clay bricks, dense concrete, self-levelling compounds, compressed fibre cement sheet, fibre reinforced concrete, timber floorboards and sanded timber, and Hebel or other aerated concrete. For very porous, absorbent surfaces, or for metal and other smooth, shiny surfaces, the manufacturer points to other products in its range.
How to use it
Start with a clean surface, free of dirt, residues and old coatings. The surface can be damp but must have no surface water. Stir the product lightly, then apply with a short nap roller or short bristle brush. Leave 3 to 6 hours between coats and put the second coat on in the opposite direction to the first. Wait at least 24 hours, and make sure the primer is completely dry, before applying finishing membranes, coatings or adhesives.
For high-build repairs, the manufacturer says to mix dry fine sand with the resin at about 3 parts sand to 1 part resin. Use a spatula for areas deeper than 1mm and keep the build to no more than 3mm.
While still wet, tools can be cleaned with ethanol, methylated spirits or alcohol-based cleaners. Once dry, it has to be removed mechanically.
Important notes
Do not use over wet surfaces. Do not leave Damp Stop exposed as a finished membrane or sealer, as it is a primer. Do not apply when the surface temperature is below 10°C or above 35°C. Because it cures with moisture, cool or dry conditions can slow drying. The quoted drying times are tack free in 2 to 4 hours and dry film (ready to overcoat) in 24 hours, based on 20°C and relative humidity above 60%.
