Description
Bastion Bond Breaker Waterproofing Joint Band is a 100mm wide, 10m long rubber reinforcing band for the most critical parts of a wet area waterproofing system, such as wall to floor junctions. It acts as the bond breaker in a liquid membrane system, so the membrane can cope with movement between two different surfaces instead of tearing at the join.
About the band
The band is made from a specialised grade of rubber that gives a rupture resistant seal and allows for the movement expected between abutting surfaces. It wets easily into the coats of a liquid membrane, which helps reinforce the finished membrane by improving puncture resistance and tensile strength. Because the band itself does the bond breaking, it removes the need for a separate bond breaker sealant at the joint, and installation is quick and straightforward. When used as part of a bond breaker system, it supports the requirements of AS 3740 (Waterproofing of domestic wet areas).
Where to use it
Indoors: wall to floor junctions in bathrooms, showers and laundries, and other critical joints in a wet area waterproofing system.
Outdoors: Bastion's technical documentation lists the band as a bond breaker option within its membrane systems, but check the band's technical data sheet and your membrane's requirements before using it on external areas.
It is designed to be embedded into Bastion liquid waterproofing membranes. Check your membrane's data sheet to confirm compatibility with other brands.
How to use it
Measure and cut the band to suit each wall to floor junction. Apply a first coat of membrane, extending about 150mm up the wall and onto the floor, then embed the band into the wet membrane. Make sure the edges of the band are fully wetted out and there are no air bubbles behind it. Where lengths of band meet, overlap them by at least 50mm. If prefabricated corners are not being used, cut and fold the bottom leg of the band at corners and make sure it is fully bonded with the membrane. Then complete the membrane coats as set out in the membrane's data sheet.
Important notes
Always follow the technical data sheet for the specific Bastion membrane you are using, including coat numbers and drying times. Surfaces should be properly prepared before the first coat goes on. Waterproofing in wet areas should be installed to the relevant Australian Standards and local requirements. If you are unsure, use a licensed waterproofer.
