Description
Bondall Betta Tilecare Wet Area Waterproofer is a fast-curing, water-based liquid rubber membrane for sealing wet areas beneath tiles and renders, supplied here in a 10L pail for bigger bathroom, laundry and balcony jobs. It dries to a flexible, elastic film that acts as a water and vapour barrier, and it is designed to cope with permanently wet conditions, including ponding water once cured.
About the formula
A water-based, one-part elastomeric membrane that is described by the manufacturer as non-toxic and non-flammable. It is classed as a Class III membrane under AS/NZS 4858 and, when used with the Betta detailing range, is designed to meet the Australian wet area requirements including AS 3740. The fast-curing formulation lets you tile or render over it quickly, and it is compatible with a range of tile adhesives, renders and toppings. No primer is needed on plasterboard or sound, dry concrete.
Where to use it
Indoors: bathroom and laundry floors and walls, shower recesses and other tiled wet areas, plus under screeds and toppings.
Outdoors: balconies, decks, podiums and terrace floors, planters and retaining walls, and roofs that will be covered with screeds or toppings.
Suitable substrates include concrete, screeds, renders, brick, plasterboard, fibre cement sheet and marine plywood. It sits under ceramic, porcelain, granite, marble and other stone tile finishes. Other surfaces, such as smooth, dense or damp ones, may need a Betta primer first, so check the technical data sheet for your substrate.
How to use it
Make sure the surface is sound, stable, clean and free of dust, oil, grease and loose material. Install the bond breaker and elastic joint band detailing first, as this is part of meeting AS 3740. Apply by brush, roller or spray unit in a minimum of two coats, changing direction between coats, to a total minimum coverage of 1.5 litres per square metre. This builds a dried film of roughly 1.2mm. Vertical or pitched areas can be done at around 1 litre per square metre. Take the membrane up walls at least 150mm in general wet areas and to 1.8m in shower recesses, finishing with a continuous, seamless film. Clean tools with water straight after use.
Important notes
Typical drying times at normal conditions (about 20°C, 50% humidity): tack free in about 45 minutes, recoat in about 1 hour, and ready to tile or topping over in about 4 hours. Retailer information quotes 6 hours before tiling, so allow the longer time in cool or humid weather and always follow the pack. Allow ample cure time before flood testing, as Bondall publishes more than one figure for this. Finish toppings must be water-based and solvent-free. Areas with rising damp or negative pressure should first be treated with Betta Damp Stop. Use on concrete slabs with hydrostatic or vapour pressure from below is outside the scope of the independent appraisal. Do not apply when rain is imminent. Always check the technical data sheet for your project.
