Description
Cabot's Aquadeck in Merbau is a water-based, low odour decking oil that protects and enriches exterior timber, supplied here in a 4L pack for decks, pergolas, fences and outdoor furniture. It combines natural oils with an acrylic protective layer, and Cabot's says it lasts twice as long as traditional oil-based decking oils when applied as directed.
About the formula
Aquadeck uses a dual technology approach. Natural oils soak into the timber to nourish it, while an acrylic barrier forms on the surface to help guard against UV, water, dirt and mould. The Merbau shade gives a lightly pigmented, semi-transparent, matt finish that lets the grain show through. It is water-based, so tools clean up with water, and it is splatter resistant.
Where to use it
Indoors: not intended for interior use.
Outdoors: timber decks, pergolas, fences, gates, screening and garden furniture.
Suitable for new, weathered or previously coated exterior timber. Existing coatings can be recoated without sanding if they are at least 30 days old and in good condition.
How to use it
Preparation depends on the timber:
- New bare timber: scrub the damp timber with Cabot's New Timber Prep to draw out tannins and oils, then wash with Cabot's Deck Clean. Squeegee off excess water and let the timber dry for at least 1 hour (longer in cool conditions). Alternatively, let new timber weather for 4 to 6 weeks (about 2 weeks for new treated pine, or follow the timber maker's advice), then clean with Deck Clean.
- Previously coated with Aquadeck: clean with Cabot's Deck Clean.
- Other existing coatings (oiled, stained, varnished or painted): treat with New Timber Prep, then clean with Deck Clean for the best adhesion.
- Weathered or grey timber: clean with Deck Clean.
Stir thoroughly with a broad, flat paddle before and during use. Apply with a brush or a Cabot's decking applicator. Apply two coats and leave about 1 hour between coats. For harsh exposure such as full sun or pool surrounds, apply three coats. Fill any holes or imperfections with a suitable timber putty after the first coat. Clean tools with water.
Important notes
The final look depends on the condition and colour of any existing coating. If the old coating is peeling, flaking, uneven or darker than the Merbau shade, strip it or sand back to bare timber, then clean with Deck Clean. Use at temperatures of 10°C or above. Cooler conditions slow drying. Check coated timber about every 12 months, as water repellency and colour will change with weathering. Not for interior use.
