Description
Crommelin Pond Sealer Clear is a water-based, clear waterproofing membrane for sealing above-ground ponds, bird baths and ornamental water features, supplied here in a 1L pail. It goes on as a seamless coating and dries to a clear, low-sheen finish, so the look of the concrete, render or brickwork underneath is kept. It is designed to stay watertight under permanently wet conditions on structures that don't move.
About the formula
A ready-to-use, water-based membrane that is non-toxic and safe for fish and plants. The manufacturer's technical data sheet also lists it as suitable for collecting or storing drinking water. It is UV stable, dries quickly and has excellent adhesion to porous cement-based surfaces. Repairs are easy, and tools wash up with water. It dries clear and hard, so it is meant for solid structures without joins, internal corners or expected movement. Where there are existing holes or cracks, or movement is expected, Crommelin recommends its Pond Sealer Colours membrane instead.
Where to use it
Indoors: ornamental water features, indoor fountains and other solid, porous water-holding features that won't flex.
Outdoors: new or renovated above-ground fish ponds, bird baths, and ornamental water features built from concrete, render, brick or block.
Suitable surfaces include concrete, cement render, brickwork, concrete blocks and other cementitious substrates. It is not suitable for non-porous surfaces.
How to use it
Surfaces must be clean, sound and completely dry, and free of dust, grease, curing compounds, release agents, loose particles, efflorescence and laitance. Repair any loose or crumbly areas first with a suitable repair mortar. To check porosity, wet a small area. If it darkens, the surface is porous and can be sealed. If it doesn't, it is too dense to seal. Stir the sealer well before use and apply with a brush or roller.
- Apply when surface and air temperatures are between 10 and 35°C and humidity stays at or below 85%.
- First coat: mix equal parts sealer and water, then apply a thin, even coat. Allow about 15 minutes to dry.
- Second coat: apply un-thinned sealer over the surface and let it dry.
- Third coat: apply un-thinned sealer at right angles (90 degrees) to the first coat.
- Wash brushes and rollers in water before the sealer dries.
Important notes
Recoat after about 4 hours. Full cure takes about 7 days, and good airflow helps. Keep the coating away from moisture until it has fully cured, and protect it from damage before filling with water. Not suitable for use in chlorinated water. Do not apply it to non-porous surfaces. It is not intended for in-ground ponds or for structures with cracks or movement. Don't apply in extreme heat, cold or humidity. Coverage depends on how porous the surface is. As a guide, 1L produces about 2 to 4 square metres of finished coating.
