Description
Crommelin Shower Sealer & Waterproofer is a clear, water-based silicate treatment designed to stop leaking showers by waterproofing the grout from within, with no need to rip out tiles. It soaks deep into cementitious grout and reacts inside it to block the passage of moisture, making it a practical fix for old, porous grout in showers, bathrooms and balconies. This listing is for a single 500ml bottle.
About the formula
A waterborne silicate treatment that penetrates grout to a depth of up to 20mm. Once in the grout it undergoes a chemical reaction that Crommelin says permanently blocks moisture, and it dries completely clear so your tiles and grout lines look the same afterwards. It is a ready-to-use, single coat treatment, so there is no mixing, and equipment cleans up with water.
Where to use it
Indoors: shower recesses, bathrooms, kitchens and laundries with cementitious grout that has started to leak or let moisture through.
Outdoors: balconies and other external areas with cementitious grout or similar cementitious construction materials.
Suitable substrates are cementitious grout and other cementitious construction materials. It is not suitable for epoxy grout.
How to use it
Preparation: make sure the area is cementitious and free of dirt, mould, mildew and other contaminants. Wash with a strong bleach solution and rinse well. Replace any loose or drummy tiles and repair damaged or cracked grout with cementitious grout. Seal metal inserts with silicone, and make sure wall-to-wall and wall-to-floor joints are sealed with silicone rather than grout. The surface must be dry, so leave the area to dry for at least 12 hours before applying.
Application: shake the bottle well, then apply liberally to the grout joints only, using a thin brush or a Crommelin Sealer Applicator Wheel. Wipe any excess off the tile surface with a damp cloth before it dries. Leave to dry for 30 to 40 minutes, then water the area thoroughly and scrub off any remaining excess. The area can be used straight away.
Conditions: apply only when surface and air temperatures are within 10°C to 35°C, and avoid application when humidity is high or likely to be during the initial cure (maximum recommended humidity is 85%).
Clean up: wash brushes and tools with water before the product dries.
Important notes
Full cure takes 7 days. Not suitable for epoxy grout. The grout must be clean and dry, and contaminants such as mould or old sealers can stop the treatment from penetrating properly. Crommelin's data sheet gives coverage of roughly 200 to 300 lineal metres of 5mm grout from the 500ml bottle, so actual coverage depends on grout width, depth and porosity.
