Description
Davco Lanko 136 Rapid Patching Mortar is a fast-setting, cement-based repair mortar for patching concrete, brickwork and rendered surfaces, supplied here in a 5kg bag that suits small to medium repairs. It gains strength very quickly, so floor finishes, underlayments and coatings can go over the repair in a fraction of the time that a standard patching mix needs.
About the formula
A one-part, pre-blended grey powder made from cement, selected aggregates and special additives. It is polymer modified, so you only add clean water. Davco describes it as shrinkage compensated to help resist cracking as it cures, with a fine, workable finish. It sets rapidly and develops very high early strength, and the manufacturer lists it as freeze/thaw resistant once cured. It is not a vapour barrier.
Where to use it
Indoors: patching holes, chips and defects in concrete floors before levelling compounds, underlayments, carpet, vinyl or ceramic tiles go down; forming small ramps or transitions before floor coverings; treating chamfers, coves and seams before waterproofing membranes or epoxy coatings.
Outdoors: repairing concrete slabs, pillars and posts; patching brickwork and rendered walls before tiling, coating or painting.
Suitable materials include concrete, brick, block, masonry and cement render. Always apply it to a sound, properly prepared surface.
How to use it
Remove dust, loose material, oil, grease and anything else that could stop a bond. Dense, power-floated concrete may need a bonding primer or moisture barrier first, so check the Davco data sheet for the recommended options. Mix with clean potable water only, at about 0.53 to 0.6 litres per 5kg bag. Add the powder to most of the water while mixing, then adjust to a workable consistency with a drill and paddle or by hand. Mix only what you can place within roughly 15 minutes. Press a first pass firmly into the surface with a steel trowel, build up to the required thickness, then finish with a wet steel trowel or foam float. Do not vibrate the mortar into place, and discard any mix that starts to stiffen.
Important notes
Do not apply in direct sun or strong winds, and keep the air and surface temperature at or above 7°C. Do not feather edge this mortar. It is a repair material and not a wearing surface, so cover it where it will be exposed to wear. The manufacturer's guide is that floor finishes and underlayments can go on after about 90 minutes. Foot traffic is possible in about 45 minutes at 23°C, and epoxy coatings can go on from about 4 hours (do an on-site test first). Deeper or heavy-load repairs need extra care and cure time, so follow the data sheet. Strength figures vary with the aggregates and site conditions.
