Feast Watson Glass Finish Epoxy Resin Kit 0.5m² (Clear Gloss)

Description

Feast Watson Glass Finish is a two-part, high-build clear epoxy that gives interior timber a thick, glossy, glass-like coating in a single pour, supplied here as the 0.5m² kit. It is designed for tabletops, benchtops, furniture and craft pieces, and it can also be used as an embedding or casting medium. Feast Watson says one application is equal to up to 40 coats of traditional varnish.

About the formula
A two-part epoxy made up of a resin (Part A) and a hardener (Part B), mixed at a 5:3 ratio. It is a pour-on, self-levelling coating that is hard-wearing and scratch-resistant. The data sheet lists it as 100% solids by volume. It builds a film about 1.2mm thick and has a high gloss level. It has excellent water resistance but is for interior use only. The cured film softens and whitens above 100°C, so keep hot pots and pans off it. The kit includes the resin, the hardener, a stirrer and the Glass Finish Usage Guide.

Where to use it
Indoors: interior timber furniture and accessories, benchtops and tabletops, small craft and decoupage projects, and embedding or casting work.
Outdoors: not suitable for exterior timber.

It is made for timber, and the data sheet says it can also be used on many other interior surfaces. It can go over Feast Watson Prooftint stain. You can also tint the mix with up to 2% Prooftint for colour. Test on an offcut first, particularly on non-timber surfaces.

How to use it
Work in a clean, dust and lint-free room that is warm (above 20°C) and not humid (under 60%). Make sure the surface is level, dry, and free of dust, grease, wax and oil. For best results, seal the timber first with two coats of a suitable sealer such as Feast Watson Proofseal. Do not sand between coats or after sealing. Fill any knots or cracks, mask areas you do not want coated, and raise the piece off the work area so the coating can drip freely off the edges. Protect the floor underneath.
Combine the resin and hardener as directed in the pack and stir thoroughly with the supplied stirrer. Do not thin the product. Pour it over the surface straight away, because mixed product left in the container heats up and sets quickly. Spread it with a brush or spreader. Do not roll or spray it. You have about 25 minutes of working time. Carbon dioxide, not heat, is what breaks up surface bubbles, so do not use a heater or hair dryer. Do not try to remove bubbles after about 30 minutes. Tidy the edges with a small brush, then leave the piece in a dust-free area to cure.
Clean tools with epoxy thinners, and use it for clean-up only.

Important notes
Not suitable for exterior timber, vertical surfaces or flooring. Follow the mixing directions exactly. Wrong proportions, or adding extra hardener, will leave the film soft or sticky. Touch dry is 24 hours, tape can come off after 6 hours, light use is after 36 hours, and full cure takes 7 days. For large projects, consider a professional applicator and always practise on a spare board first. For deep scratches in the cured film, lightly sand and apply one more coat. For routine care, wipe with a soft damp cloth.
