Description
FrogTape Pro Grade Deck and Joist Flashing Tape is a linerless, black waterproofing tape made to shield the timber parts of a deck from moisture, supplied here as a 96mm wide x 15.2m roll. It suits deck joists, stair stringers, posts and ledger boards, adding a protective layer over the surfaces most exposed to water, and it is a practical choice for both builders and capable DIYers.
About the formula
The tape pairs a solventless acrylic adhesive (ShurGRIP) with a conformable black polyolefin film backing. The adhesive is made using a UV curing process, is free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and is designed not to react with common caulks and sealants. The film bends easily around edges, corners and other transitions, and the tape self-heals around nails, screws and other fasteners to keep a waterproof seal. It is self-wound, so there is no release liner to peel and dispose of, and no primer is needed.
Where to use it
Outdoors: the tops and sides of deck joists, stair stringers, posts and ledger boards in residential deck construction, where the tape helps keep water away from framing timber.
Installation temperature: it can be applied in a wide range, from -18°C to 65°C, and once installed it is designed to keep performing from -40°C to 115°C. It is rated for all-weather performance, including cold and damp conditions, and has 12-month UV resistance while exposed.
Suitable surfaces include pressure-treated timber, OSB, concrete and other common building materials. The adhesive is initially repositionable, so you can adjust placement before pressing it down firmly.
How to use it
Make sure the surface is clean, dry and free of grease, oil and other contaminants. Unroll the tape along the joist, stringer, post or ledger, position it, then press it down firmly so the adhesive makes full contact. Work the tape around edges and corners, and press it into the surface around fasteners. Wider widths wrap further down the sides of a joist, so choose the width that best matches your framing. The same tape is also made in 48mm, 152mm and 304mm widths.
Important notes
The manufacturer states the tape meets the AAMA 711-22 flashing tape test protocol. The 12-month UV resistance applies to the tape while it is exposed, so cover it with your decking or cladding in good time. As with any building product, check that it suits your surface and method of application before starting a larger job.
