Description
Gilly's Beeswax Filler Sticks are coloured wax sticks for repairing cracks, gaps and small holes in timber, supplied here as an assorted pack of six sticks in different wood tones. You pick the shade closest to your timber, work the wax into the damage and finish the surface, which suits furniture, cabinets, frames and general timber touch-ups.
About the formula
These are pigmented wax fillers made from pure beeswax, natural pigments and a natural hardener. Once set, the wax can be buffed to a fine finish and coated with most materials. The manufacturer says the colours can be blended, and leftover wax can be melted down and reused.
Where to use it
Indoors: filling nail holes, gaps, joins and cracks in furniture, cabinetry, frames and other timber items.
Outdoors: the manufacturer does not publish outdoor performance data for this product, so it is best treated as a timber repair filler for interior and finished-furniture work.
Suitable for most wood surfaces, in both soft and hard woods. It is aimed at damage wider or deeper than about 1mm. Very fine scratches and surface blemishes are better treated with a wax product made for that job.
How to use it
Start with a clean, dry surface and apply the filler to raw timber before any oil, wax or lacquer finish. Pick the stick closest to the timber, or melt two colours together to blend a custom match.
- Soften the wax with a soldering iron, a hot knife, or gentle heat from a heat gun or hairdryer. Take care, because extra heat can affect the surrounding finish.
- You can also soften a stick briefly in a microwave. Test in very short bursts, as it only needs to become malleable. Press the softened wax into the gap.
- For larger repairs, chip off the amount you need and melt it into the gap.
- Once the wax has firmed up again, scrape off the excess with a plastic spatula or an old card, then buff to a smooth finish.
Important notes
The wax firms up quickly after application, typically within about 10 to 30 minutes depending on conditions. Rubbing a cold stick over a gap like a crayon works, but adhesion is better when the wax has been melted. Beeswax can ignite when overheated, so the manufacturer advises caution and says not to apply an open flame directly to the sticks. The product may contain traces of bee pollen and soy. If you plan to use it on a surface that will touch food, check suitability with the manufacturer first, as the coloured sticks are pigmented.

Safety
Take care when heating the wax, as molten wax can burn skin and beeswax can ignite at high temperatures. Keep it away from open flames and avoid overheating. Allow the wax to cool before handling. Store in a cool, dry place. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full details.
