Description
Gripset Betta Bitumen Rubber is a two-in-one, solvent-free liquid membrane in a 1 litre pail, supplied here for waterproofing underground, immersed and general building work. Apply it as a bitumen polymer membrane, or dilute it with water to make an economical black bitumen paint where a full membrane is not needed.
About the formula
A water-based, concentrated bitumen and latex polymer liquid that dries to a flexible black film. The manufacturer describes it as solvent free, with good sealing and adhesion on a range of building surfaces. It can be applied to damp surfaces provided there is no standing water, and it is approved for potable water contact (tested at an exposure of 1000mm2 per litre). Diluted 1:1 with water, 1L of concentrate makes 2L of bitumen paint.
Where to use it
Indoors: interior areas that need a waterproof or protective coating, where a membrane or bitumen paint suits the job.
Outdoors: underground and retaining walls, garden beds, planter boxes and landscaped areas, fish ponds, stock troughs and water features, and general protective coating work. It also suits fully immersed applications when applied at the higher immersed coverage rate.
Suitable surfaces include concrete, masonry, brick, timber, cement sheeting, metals and aged bitumen, along with other common building surfaces. If you plan to coat over existing paints or finishes, check with Gripset Betta first.
How to use it
Start with a clean, sound surface free of loose material and standing water. The product is self-priming. For porous surfaces, the manufacturer's literature suggests diluting the first coat with water (about 1 part concentrate to 3 parts water). Use a separate primer on non-porous or smooth surfaces and on surfaces affected by rising damp. Apply by brush, roller, trowel or spray, working each extra coat in a different direction to the one before.
As a membrane, apply at least 2 coats at a combined minimum of 1.5 litres per square metre, which gives a dried film of about 1.2mm. For immersed areas, allow a minimum of 2 litres per square metre. Uneven or porous surfaces can need more. For paint use, mix the concentrate with clean water 1:1 by volume. Wash tools in water while the product is still wet.
Important notes
Drying times at about 20°C: tack free in 60 to 90 minutes, recoat after 2 to 4 hours, dry film in 24 hours, backfilling underground after 4 days, and immersed areas after 21 days. Temperature, humidity and surface porosity all change these times. Once dry, the product has to be removed mechanically or with solvent. For potable water use, wash the surface down and discard the first fill before using the water for drinking. At the minimum membrane rate, 1L covers well under 1 square metre, so check quantities before you buy.

Safety
It is non-flammable as supplied, but the dried film will burn in a general fire. Wash your hands after use and before eating, drinking or smoking. Do not let it enter drains, sewers or waterways. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full details.
