Description
Grunt Shock Cord 8mm x 20m in black is a stretchy, hard-wearing cord for securing tarps, covers and loads, supplied as a long 20 metre length so you can cut it to suit each job. It has a latex rubber core inside a braided outer jacket, giving it the stretch and recovery that makes it handy anywhere a fixed rope is too unforgiving.
About the product
The rubber core absorbs shock and keeps tension on whatever you are holding down, while the braided jacket protects the core from rubbing and wear. The cord is UV protected and is resistant to oil, petrol, rot, mildew and general weathering, so it copes well with life outdoors. The 8mm thickness suits heavier securing jobs where a thinner cord would feel light.
Where to use it
Indoors: making bungee-style cords and ties for storage, workshop and garage tasks.
Outdoors: holding down tarps and tarpaulins, and securing trailer, boat and caravan covers, marine canopies and similar covers.
How to use it
- Cut the cord to length with sharp scissors or a knife. A quick pass with a flame or hot blade is a common way to stop the ends fraying.
- Fit hooks, clips, cord buttons or end toggles of a suitable size, or tie the ends off with a secure knot.
- Work the cord around the load or cover and stretch it to take up the slack, so the tension is firm without overstretching.
- Check the cord and anchor points from time to time and replace the cord if the jacket wears through or the cord loses its stretch.
Important notes
Shock cord is designed for holding and tensioning light to moderate loads and covers. It is not a rated lifting, towing or safety line and should not be used where a failure could cause injury. Stretched cord can snap back, so keep your face and others clear when fitting or releasing it, and wear eye protection if you are working under tension.

Care and storage
Keep the cord clean and dry, and rinse off salt, dirt or oil with fresh water if it gets grubby. Store it coiled, out of prolonged direct sunlight and away from sharp edges. Inspect it before each use and replace it if it is cut, frayed or no longer stretches back properly.
