Description
Gyprock DIY Cornice Cement is a powder-based, mix-with-water adhesive made for fixing cornice at the wall and ceiling junction, supplied here in a handy 2.5kg bag for small rooms, repairs and touch-ups. It is a setting-type compound rather than a drying type, so it grabs well at the start and builds a high bond strength once set. It is made in Australia by CSR Gyprock.
About the formula
A dry plaster-based powder that you mix with clean water into a workable paste. Once mixed, you get a working life of roughly 50 to 60 minutes, which is enough to fix several lengths of cornice and tidy the joints without rushing. Because it sets by reaction rather than by drying out, it hardens in a predictable timeframe. Gyprock describes it as a low VOC product.
Where to use it
Indoors: fixing Gyprock cornice at wall and ceiling junctions where the lining is plasterboard or fibre cement, finishing cornice joints and mitres, filling small gaps along the cornice line and carrying out small cornice repairs.
Outdoors: not intended for exterior use. It is designed for interior cornice work.
Suitable surfaces are plasterboard and fibre cement wall and ceiling linings, bonded to Gyprock cornice.
How to use it
Cut cornice sections to length using a saw and mitre box or a mitre guide. Add 2kg of powder to 1.1 litres of clean water and mix to a creamy consistency. Only mix as much as you can use within the 50 to 60 minute working life. Apply the cement with a broadknife as a bead along both back edges of the cornice and onto the mitres. Butter and fix each length separately, starting with the shorter lengths. Hold each piece in place with temporary nails or screws, then remove the surplus cement and clean off with a brush or sponge. Smooth the mitres and fill any gaps with more cement. Leave it to set for at least 2 hours before removing the temporary fixings and sanding the joints.
Important notes
The bag is not re-sealable, so plan your batches and keep the bag closed and dry between uses. Shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture. Do not mix more than you can use in the working time, and do not re-use material that has started to stiffen. Gyprock lists this product for residential cornice fixing and repairs on plasterboard and fibre cement. Clean tools with water before the cement sets.

Safety
Dust created when sanding or cutting the set material is a nuisance dust, so keep dust low, work in a ventilated space and wear gloves, eye protection and a suitable dust mask when sanding. If it gets in your eyes, flush with plenty of running water, holding the eyelids open, for about 15 minutes. Store the bag in a dry place and keep it out of reach of children. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full details.
