Description
The Gyprock Rapid Repair Kit is a complete, ready-to-go pack for patching damaged plasterboard walls and ceilings, from small nicks and cracks through to holes up to 150mm x 150mm. Everything needed for the job is supplied in one mixing bucket, so a first-time DIYer can go from damaged wall to a surface ready for paint without hunting down separate products or tools.
About the formula
The compound in the kit is Gyprock Rapid Patch, a fast-setting dry powder that you mix with clean water into a smooth paste. Gyprock lists a working life of around 20 minutes once mixed, with minimal shrinkage when filling small cracks and dents, and a surface that is ready to sand in around 40 minutes. Gyprock lists the powder at a specific gravity of 2.3 to 2.4 and a low VOC content, under 10 g/L per material. The kit is made in Australia by CSR Gyprock.
What is in the kit
- 1kg bag of Gyprock Rapid Patch compound
- 2 x Gyprock plasterboard repair panels (150mm x 150mm) for larger holes
- Gyprock Easy Tape (20 metres)
- 100mm broadknife
- Sanding block
- Mixing bucket (also the kit's packaging)
- Step-by-step instructions
Where to use it
Indoors: patching dents, scratches, cracks and holes in plasterboard walls and ceilings, including door-handle dings and holes left by removed fixings or fittings.
Other substrates: the Rapid Patch compound itself is also rated by Gyprock for repairs to fibre cement, timber and masonry, and it can be used as an all-purpose compound for setting plasterboard joints. Check the substrate and the finish before using it in damp areas.
Suitable materials include plasterboard (the main use of the kit), fibre cement, timber and masonry (the compound only).
How to use it
Remove any loose paint or crumbling material around the damage and lightly sand the edges. Mix the powder with clean water to a creamy consistency. Gyprock's guide for small repairs is about 1 cup (260g) of powder to 150mL of water. Only mix as much as you can use in around 20 minutes. For small nicks and cracks, fill with the broadknife, let it set, then sand smooth. For larger holes, cut and fit a repair panel with backing blocks fixed using the compound, cover the joins with Easy Tape, and apply compound over the tape. Let each coat set fully before the next, then sand lightly and the wall is ready to paint.
Important notes
Use clean domestic water for mixing, and wash tools before the compound sets. The kit is aimed at repairs up to 150mm x 150mm, so larger damage will need a bigger repair. You may also need a hand saw, trimming knife, pencil, dust mask and eye protection depending on the job. Store unused compound dry, out of the weather and out of direct sunlight.

Safety
Cutting, sanding or grinding the set material makes dust that can irritate the eyes, nose and throat, so wear a dust mask and eye protection and avoid prolonged skin contact. Keep out of reach of children and store in a cool, dry place. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full details.
