Description
The Protite Large Fibreglass Repair Kit is an all-in-one pack for patching cracks, dents and holes in fibreglass, metal and timber, with a 1kg tub of resin and 1m² of chopped strand matting for bigger repair jobs. Everything needed to mix, lay up and finish a repair is in the box, so it suits boat, caravan, car, surfboard and household fixes alike.
About the formula
The resin is a polyester, low styrene emission (LSE) type, made to give good strength, adhesion and an easy-wetting consistency on most repair jobs. It is cured with the supplied catalyst hardener, which starts the setting reaction. The chopped strand matting adds rigidity and reinforcement and conforms easily to tight curves and corners. Once cured, the repair is water resistant, sandable and paintable, and the resin can be tinted with paint (up to 5%) for a solid colour match.
Where to use it
Indoors: repairs to fibreglass items, timber and other household surfaces, plus craft and workshop fixes such as surfboard repair.
Outdoors: caravans, boats, trailers, bikes and cars, fibreglass pools, water tanks and water skis, downpipes, leaky gutters, metal roofs and rusted panels.
Suitable materials include fibreglass, steel, iron, aluminium, timber, PVC, masonry and smooth polyester or wooden surfaces.
What is in the kit
- Fibreglass resin, 1kg
- Fibreglass chopped matting, 1m²
- Fibreglass resin catalyst hardener, 15ml (dropper bottle)
- Nitrile gloves
- Measuring cup
- Applicator brush
- Mixing stick
- Mixing bucket
How to use it
Abrade the damaged area and clean it, removing loose debris and old paint, because poor surface preparation is the usual cause of failed repairs. Cut the matting to size, then mix the resin and hardener in the supplied bucket, stirring for at least two minutes and scraping the bottom and sides so it mixes evenly. If you want to tint the resin, add the paint tint before the hardener. Brush a coat of mixed resin over the repair, lay the matting into it, then saturate the matting with more resin, dabbing to push out air pockets. Add further layers while the previous one is still wet, or lightly sand a cured layer before adding the next. Leave the repair to cure fully (the manufacturer states about 24 hours), then sand smooth and paint if required.
Important notes
Always follow the mixing instructions on the pack. Under-mixing leaves soft, uncured patches. Epoxy resin can be applied over fully cured, dewaxed and well-sanded polyester, but polyester should never be used over cured epoxy. Cure time is slower in cold weather. Use in a well-ventilated area and avoid breathing in sanding dust once cured.
