Description
Rust-Oleum LeakSeal Flexible Rubber Coating Spray in Black is a ready-to-use aerosol sealer for stopping leaks and sealing cracks around the home, workshop and site, supplied here as a single 340g can. It sprays on as a rubberised coating that builds a flexible, water-tight barrier over a wide range of common building surfaces, which makes it a quick fix for hard-to-reach or awkward spots where a caulking gun is difficult to use.
About the formula
A solvent-based, hydrocarbon resin rubber coating that sprays on as a high-build film. It dries to a firm, semi-smooth black finish that stays flexible and is formulated not to sag or drip. The cured coating helps block moisture and protects against rust and corrosion, and it can be top-coated with acrylic (latex) or oil-based paints once cured.
Where to use it
Indoors: ductwork, pipes, air conditioner drip pans, vents and other protected areas where a flexible waterproof seal is needed (use only with good ventilation).
Outdoors: gutters, downpipes, roof sheeting, flashing, skylight surrounds, metal sheds and buildings, and concrete or masonry surfaces where cracks or small holes let water in.
Suitable surfaces include metal, aluminium, galvanised metal, PVC, concrete, masonry, asphalt roofing materials, vinyl siding and fibreglass. Always do a small test spray on an inconspicuous area first, particularly on plastics.
How to use it
Prepare the surface so it is clean, dry and free of loose material, dirt, grease and flaking paint. Do a test spray on a piece of cardboard first to get a feel for the spray pattern, then apply the coating over the leak or crack using even passes, following the directions on the can. Additional coats can be applied after 15 to 30 minutes if a heavier build is needed. Once cured, the surface can be top-coated with acrylic or oil-based paint. Use outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
Important notes
The coating is touch dry in about 2 hours, can be recoated with itself after 15 to 30 minutes, and can be top-coated after 24 hours (times based on roughly 21 to 27°C and 50% relative humidity, so allow longer in cool or humid conditions). It is not intended for surfaces under continuous water immersion. It is not rated as fire or high-heat resistant, and it is not a mould or mildew-resistant coating. Coverage depends on the film thickness applied: about 0.74 square metres per can at a thin film (62.5 microns) or about 0.37 square metres per can at a thicker film (125 microns), allowing for typical material loss. Shelf life is around 2 to 3 years.
