Description
Rust-Oleum LeakSeal Self-Fusing Silicone Tape is a stretch-and-wrap repair tape for stopping leaks on pipes and hoses and for insulating damaged electrical wires, supplied here as a single black 25.4mm x 3.04m roll. It has no adhesive layer. Instead, each wrap fuses to the layer beneath it, so it forms a tight, sealed sleeve around the repair and can be cut off later without leaving sticky residue behind.
About the formula
This is a silicone rubber tape that bonds to itself rather than to the surface underneath. Rust-Oleum describes it as a moisture and chemical resistant barrier that also helps protect against corrosion. Its technical data sheet rates it Excellent for moisture resistance, electrical insulation, UV and ozone resistance and corrosion prevention. It rates solvent, abrasion and tear resistance as Good. Acid, oil and hydrocarbon resistance is rated Good to Fair. The tape has a minimum tensile strength of 700 psi, a minimum elongation of 300% and a Shore A hardness of 55 (plus or minus 5) once cured for 24 hours. It meets UL 510. Rust-Oleum states it insulates up to 8,000 volts.
Where to use it
Indoors: temporary or emergency repairs on leaking pipes, fittings and hoses, and insulating or protecting frayed electrical wires and cable joins.
Outdoors: wrapping hoses, fittings and exposed connections that face moisture and sunlight, including automotive and general workshop repairs.
Because it fuses to itself, it works best on pipes, hoses, cables and other tubular or irregular shapes that you can wrap fully around.
How to use it
Dry the surface before you start. Press the end of the tape onto the problem area, hold it firmly, then stretch the tape with tension as you wrap it around the object. Overlap each layer by about 13mm (the manufacturer gives 1.2 to 1.4cm) and wrap the tape over itself so it fuses. Cover the whole problem area, cut the tape and press the end firmly into place. To remove, cut the tape carefully with scissors or a knife.
Important notes
The tape fuses to itself, so wrap it all the way around the item with each layer overlapping the last. The 700 psi figure on the TDS is a tensile strength rating, so do not treat it as a working pressure rating for pipes. Keep pressurised, hot or critical repairs in line with the system's own requirements and replace them with a proper repair where needed. The TDS gives a continuous operating range of -45°C to 200°C and an intermittent range of -65°C to 260°C. Flame resistance is rated Good, so do not treat the tape as fireproof. For electrical repairs, make sure the circuit is isolated and have any permanent work done by a licensed electrician.

Safety
If it gets in your eyes, flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, keep the eyelids open, remove contact lenses if easy to do and keep rinsing. Keep out of reach of children and store in a cool, dry place. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full details.
