Description
Rust-Oleum LeakSeal Self-Fusing Silicone Tape is a no-adhesive repair tape for stopping leaks on pipes and hoses and for wrapping damaged wiring insulation, supplied here as a clear 25.4mm x 3.04m roll. It stretches and wraps around awkward shapes, then fuses to itself to form a tight, water-resistant seal that suits quick home fixes as well as automotive and workshop repairs.
About the formula
This is a silicone rubber tape that bonds to itself rather than to the surface underneath. That is why it peels away cleanly later without leaving a sticky residue. The manufacturer rates it excellent for moisture resistance, electrical insulation, UV and ozone resistance and corrosion prevention, and good for flame, abrasion, tear and solvent resistance. It is also rated good to fair for acid and oil resistance. It meets UL 510 and is claimed to insulate up to 8,000 volts.
Where to use it
Indoors: weeping or leaking pipes and joints, hoses on appliances, and frayed or worn cable insulation (see the electrical safety note below).
Outdoors: garden and irrigation hoses, exposed pipework, and vehicle or equipment hoses and fittings exposed to sun and weather.
Suited to wrapping around pipes, hoses, fittings and cables made from common materials such as metal and rubber. As the tape fuses to itself rather than relying on adhesion, it conforms to irregular shapes well. Test a small area first on delicate surfaces.
How to use it
Dry the area to be repaired first. Hold the end of the tape firmly on the problem spot, then stretch the tape under tension as you wrap it around the object. Overlap each layer by about 13mm and keep wrapping so the tape lies over itself and fuses. Cover the whole problem area, cut the tape when finished and press the end down firmly. To remove it, simply unwrap or cut it off.
Important notes
The tape needs to be stretched while wrapping, with each turn overlapping the last, to fuse properly. Loose or single-layer wraps will not seal. Treat it as an effective repair or emergency fix, and replace damaged pipes, hoses or cables where a permanent solution is needed. The manufacturer lists continuous operating temperatures from -45°C to 200°C and intermittent exposure from -65°C to 260°C, so keep it away from conditions above these limits. Do not rely on it to repair mains-voltage wiring: isolate the power first and have electrical work carried out by a licensed electrician. Avoid contact with strong oxidising agents, strong acids and strong alkalis.

Safety
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before eating, drinking or smoking after handling. If it gets in the eyes, rinse with water and remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. If heated to decomposition, silicone can give off acrid smoke and irritating fumes, so avoid excess heat and ensure good ventilation. Store the roll in a cool, dry place away from strong oxidisers, acids and alkalis. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full details.
