Description
Selleys Kwik Grip Horizontal is a flexible, solvent-based contact adhesive that grips the moment two coated surfaces meet, supplied here in a 500ml can for larger bonding jobs. It suits both porous and non-porous materials and has a thicker body that is easy to spread on flat work, making it a handy choice for laminates, rubber, leather, cork and timber around the home, workshop or job site.
About the formula
This is a polychloroprene contact adhesive in a solvent carrier, light amber in colour. The thicker consistency helps it spread without running or stringing, and it is designed for bonding without clamping once the surfaces are joined. The cured bond is flexible, heat resistant up to 130°C, water resistant and holds up against dilute acids and alkalis.
Where to use it
Indoors: fixing laminate sheet to benchtops and cabinetry, bonding cork, felt and rubber, repairing leather and canvas items, and general workshop or furniture jobs.
Outdoors: repairing tents, car covers and other outdoor canvas equipment, and refitting rubber seals, as the cured bond is rated for exterior use.
Suitable materials include laminated plastics (such as Laminex and Formica), rubber, leather, canvas, felt, timber, hardboard and compressed board, cork, metals including aluminium, and fibre cement sheeting. Test any other plastic on an offcut first.
How to use it
- Make sure both surfaces are clean, dry and free of dust, grease and loose material.
- Apply an even coat to both surfaces using a brush or spreader.
- Leave the surfaces apart until the adhesive is touch dry. This takes about 20 minutes and should not exceed 40 minutes.
- Line the surfaces up carefully before they meet, using spacers such as dowels on large panels, because the bond grabs immediately on contact.
- Press the surfaces together firmly, working from one edge, then roll or press with a padded block to bring the whole area into contact.
- For small porous areas, you can apply to one surface only, join while wet and clamp until dry.
- Wipe away wet excess with mineral turpentine.
Important notes
Full bond strength develops in about 24 hours. Do not use on polyethylene or polypropylene. Some plastics, including vinyl sheeting and polystyrene, can be attacked by solvent-based contact adhesives, so test first. Warped or curved surfaces may need clamping. Use only in a well-ventilated area and keep away from heat, sparks and open flames.
