Description
Selleys Liquid Nails Original is the go-to multipurpose construction adhesive for builders and DIYers, supplied here as a six-pack of 320g cartridges for bigger jobs and stocking the ute. It forms a strong, long-lasting bond across most common building materials and stays flexible enough to ride out the shrinkage and thermal movement that weaken rigid bonds over time.
About the formula
A solvent-based adhesive with a firm, non-sag body that holds a bead on vertical work without dripping or stringing. It works on wet or dry timber, so there is no waiting for timber to dry out, and it still extrudes easily in cold weather. Once cured it resists water and weather and can be painted over for a tidy finish. It meets Australian Standard AS 2329.
Where to use it
Indoors: sheet flooring to joists, wallboard and panelling to timber or metal frames, cork tiles to timber, fibre cement or plaster, hardboard over floorboards, metal or aluminium door strips to floors and walls, and a bead in the groove of tongue and groove boards to stop squeaks.
Outdoors: timber or fibre cement sheeting to brick or block walls and other general bonding where water and weather resistance is needed.
Suitable materials include timber, MDF, particleboard, plasterboard, masonry, concrete, tiles and ceramics, metals, rubber, glass and many plastics (test plastics first).
How to use it
Make sure surfaces are free of oil, grease and dust, and wipe away any pooled water on wet timber. Cut the cartridge tip, fit the nozzle and trim to about a 5mm opening. Run a bead along each joist, stud or batten, or every 40cm across broad flat panels. Press the parts firmly together and hold with nails, screws or clamps so the whole bond area makes contact. Parts can be adjusted for around 20 minutes. Leave fixings in place for at least 24 hours before removing them. Clean uncured adhesive with mineral turpentine; cured adhesive must be scraped or sanded off.
Important notes
A strong bond usually develops within 24 hours, keeps building over 2 to 3 days and reaches full cure at about 7 days. Allow longer for thick beads, non-porous surfaces and cold conditions. Not for mirrors (use Liquid Nails Mirror, Metal and Glass), not for styrene foam (use Liquid Nails Fast Grab), not for metals heated by direct sun, not for permanent water immersion and not for tightly clamped joinery. Do not rely on it as the only fixing in structural applications; combine with mechanical fasteners in high-stress work. Not suitable for polyethylene, polypropylene or Teflon.
