Description
Selleys Liquid Nails Original in the 680g sausage pack is a multipurpose construction adhesive for builders and DIYers who get through a lot of adhesive, with more product per pack than a standard cartridge and fewer changeovers on big jobs. It gives a strong, lasting bond on most common building materials and stays flexible enough to cope with the shrinkage and thermal movement that can weaken rigid bonds over time.
About the formula
A solvent-based adhesive that holds its shape without dripping, sagging or stringing, so application is tidy. It bonds well to both wet and dry timber, so there is no need to wait for timber to dry out, and it extrudes easily in cooler weather. It also bridges gaps on rough or ill-fitting building materials, resists water and weather once cured, and can be painted over for a neat finish. It meets Australian Standard AS 2329.
Where to use it
Indoors: sheet flooring to joists, wallboard or panelling to timber or metal frames, cork tiles to timber, fibro or plaster, metal or aluminium door strips to floors or walls, and squeaky tongue and groove boards.
Outdoors: timber or fibre cement sheeting to brick or cement block walls, and masonite to timber.
Suitable materials include timber, plasterboard, MDF, particleboard, fibre cement sheeting, brick, masonry, concrete, render, tiles and ceramics, metals, rubber and glass. Test plastics for compatibility before committing to a full job.
How to use it
Make sure surfaces are free of oil, grease and dust, and wipe off any pooled water from wet timber. Fit the sausage pack into a suitable sausage-style applicator gun and run a bead along the joist, stud or batten. On broad, flat surfaces, apply beads about 40cm apart. Press the pieces firmly together and fix with enough nails, screws or clamping to hold the load and keep full contact across the bond area. You can reposition the work for up to about 20 minutes after fitting. Leave the adhesive to set for at least 24 hours before removing any temporary fasteners or clamps. Clean uncured adhesive with mineral turpentine; cured adhesive needs to be scraped or sanded off.
Important notes
A strong bond is usually reached within 24 hours and keeps building over the next few days, with full cure in about 7 days. Allow longer for thick applications, less porous surfaces and cold weather. Not suitable for styrene foam, for permanent water immersion, or as the only bonding method in structural applications.
