Description
Sika Abelrod is a lightweight closed cell polyethylene foam rod used to fill and set the depth of expansion joints and gaps before sealant goes in, supplied here as a 10mm x 50m roll. It acts as a bond breaker and depth control behind the sealant, so the finished joint can flex properly, and it recovers well after being compressed so it keeps a tight barrier against dirt and water.
About the material
Abelrod is a closed cell polyethylene foam with a white finish. Sika describes it as strong for its weight, highly resistant to weathering and most common chemicals, and a suitable filler to install ahead of most sealants. Its recovery properties let it cope with years of joint compression and expansion. It meets the requirements of Australian Standard AS2170 for plastic materials in food contact use. Sika lists the density at 30 kg/m3.
Where to use it
Indoors: joints in interior walls, around skylights and as a filler behind sealant in internal gaps, plus draft proofing and dust sealing.
Outdoors: vertical and horizontal joints in concrete and masonry, joints between precast concrete panels, shop fronts and curtain wall construction, and swimming pool areas.
Suitable for joints in concrete and masonry substrates. It also suits general gap filling, sealing electrical control boxes, truck and trailer construction and use as piping around chairs.
How to use it
Make sure the joint surfaces are dry, clean and free of dust, dirt, grease, oil and wax. Press the rod into the joint so it sits at the right depth for your sealant, and compress it by about 30% once in position so it holds firmly and forms a good seal. Apply your chosen sealant over the top once the rod is seated.
Important notes
Check the sealant manufacturer's recommendations for joint width, depth and compatibility before you start. Store the rod in a cool, dry area out of direct sunlight. Sika states that the product has an unlimited shelf life when stored dry.

Safety
Keep it away from open flame and heat sources, as foam products can burn and give off irritating fumes when heated or burned. Handle with normal care and dispose of offcuts in line with local waste rules. Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full details.
