Description
Sika SikaLastomer-710 is a black, solvent-containing butyl sealant in a 310ml cartridge, made for permanently plastic joints that may need to be taken apart again later. It is a one-component paste that stays workable on the joint, so it suits vehicle, caravan and general industrial sealing where a removable seal is an advantage.
About the formula
A butyl-based paste with a non-sag body that stays where it is applied. It contains solvents and sets by physical drying, meaning the solvent evaporates rather than a chemical reaction taking place, so no heat is needed. Sika lists good ageing resistance and a wide adhesive spectrum, and the joint stays plastic in service. The black colour helps the seal blend into dark components. It is resistant to fresh water, seawater, limewater and water-based cleaning solutions, but has only weak resistance to fuels, mineral oils and vegetable or animal fats.
Where to use it
Vehicles and transport: plastic seals in cars, buses, trucks and caravans where the joint may need to be separated later.
Industrial: plastic sealing of joints in a range of industrial sectors, including appliance and equipment assembly.
Sika states it adheres well with minimal surface preparation to almost every common substrate used in these fields. Always test on your actual materials first, as the manufacturer notes the user must check suitability for the intended job.
How to use it
Make sure the joint surfaces are clean and dry. Apply the sealant into the joint with a manual or compressed-air gun, working carefully to avoid trapping air. Do not apply below 10°C or above 35°C. Joints can be tooled with soapy water. On non-porous surfaces, dried sealant can be removed by dabbing it off. On porous surfaces, cured sealant can only be removed mechanically. Wash hands and exposed skin straight away with a hand wipe or suitable industrial hand cleaner and water, and do not use solvents on skin.
Important notes
Sika supplies this product for experienced professional users only. It can only be overpainted with some water-based paint systems, and compatibility must be tested first. Paint is usually less elastic than the sealant, so it may crack over the joint. Tests under real working conditions are needed before production use. Sika quotes weak resistance to fuels and oils, so it is not a good choice where the joint will be exposed to them.
