Stanley S100 Stud Sensor Stud Finder (STHT77403)

Description

The Stanley S100 Stud Sensor is a pocket-sized stud finder that helps you locate wood and metal studs and joists before you drill, nail or hang anything on a wall. It adds a live AC wire warning for extra peace of mind, and it comes in a tough yellow case with a pencil notch so you can mark the spot as soon as you find it.

About the product
The S100 uses electronic sensing to find the edges of studs and joists behind common wall linings. Three-stage LED indicators and an audible tone show you when an edge is detected. Auto calibration sets the tool up each time you start a scan. The impact-resistant ABS case has a soft-grip design that is comfortable to hold and compact enough to keep in a tool pouch or pocket.

Where to use it
Indoors: finding studs behind plasterboard and similar wall linings before mounting shelves, brackets, TVs, mirrors, cabinets and picture frames, and checking for live AC wiring before you drill or fix.
Outdoors: designed for interior wall work.

How to use it

  • Open the battery door on the back and connect a 9V battery (not included).
  • Hold the sensor flat against the wall with firm contact, then press and hold the activation button until calibration finishes. Keep the button held while you scan.
  • Slide the sensor slowly across the wall. The LEDs and tone signal when a stud edge is found, and the marking channel and pencil notch help you mark the edge accurately.
  • If the live wire alert lights and sounds, stop and treat the area as having live wiring nearby.
  • Replace the battery when the green LED flashes.

Important notes
Detects wood and metal studs and joists up to a 19mm depth. The manufacturer lists AC live wire detection behind walls up to about 51mm deep. Keep your free hand clear of the sensor and wall while scanning, as this can affect readings. The manual advises that it does not scan through carpet, foil-faced materials, ceramic tile, cement, or metal or plaster walls. Double studs and headers can read as one wide stud. The live wire alert is a guide only and does not replace proper electrical checks, so turn off power at the switchboard where required before drilling into walls. The 9V battery is not included.
