Description
The Sutton Tools Viper Cobalt Drill Set packs 19 general purpose cobalt drill bits into one case, for tradies and keen DIYers who drill a mix of metals, timber and plastics. The 5% cobalt content is aimed at standing up to heat and wear, and Sutton Tools rates the bits at up to twice the tool life of its standard Viper drills.
About the product
These are jobber-style twist drills with a 118° split point that helps the bit start where you want it, with less wandering on the first contact. The cobalt content gives better heat and wear resistance than a plain high speed steel bit, which suits repeated drilling in harder materials. They work in a drill press or machine setup as well as in a hand-held drill.
Where to use it
Indoors: workshop and garage jobs, fabrication, furniture and cabinetry, and general repairs around the house.
Outdoors: site work, fencing and framing hardware, trailers, vehicles and general maintenance.
Suitable materials include steel, stainless steel, aluminium, brass, timber and plastics.
How to use it
- Pick the bit size that suits the hole you need and fit it firmly in the chuck.
- Mark the spot, then start slowly so the split point can locate itself before you increase speed.
- Use steady, even pressure and let the bit do the cutting.
- Back off the speed in harder metals, and clear swarf from the hole as you go.
- Use cutting fluid when drilling metal to help keep the bit cool.
- Return each bit to its slot in the case after use so the set stays organised.
Important notes
This is a general purpose set. It is not designed for masonry, concrete or tile, so use a purpose-made masonry or glass and tile bit for those. Always secure the workpiece before drilling. Check the sizes in the case against your job before you start.

Wear safety glasses when drilling and keep hands clear of the spinning bit. Let bits cool before handling after drilling metal. Wipe off swarf and moisture, then keep the set closed in its case in a dry spot to protect the cutting edges. Keep out of reach of children.
