Description
Turbo Builder's Bog is a trade quality, two part polyester filler for repairing damaged and rotted timber, supplied here in a 500ml can for builders, painters and capable DIYers. It sets to a hard, wood-like finish that you can sand, drill and paint, so it suits window sills, door frames and other jobs where replacing the timber is not practical.
About the formula
A polyester-based filler paste that cures by a chemical reaction when mixed with the red hardener paste, rather than by drying out. Because of this, it shows no obvious shrinkage. You choose the working time by adjusting how much hardener you add within the range printed on the can, and the mix also sets faster in warm weather. As it sets it passes through a soft, cheese-like stage where it can be trimmed with a blade or a surform file. Shaping at this point saves a lot of sanding. It spreads smoothly, holds its shape on large fills without slumping, and bonds firmly to timber.
Where to use it
Indoors: filling holes, gaps and dents in architraves, skirtings, door frames and other timber trims before painting.
Outdoors: repairing window sills, sashes, fascias, decks and door frames, including areas where the timber is partly rotten, once the soft material has been cleared back to sound wood.
Suitable material is timber. It is designed as a timber repair filler and can be painted over once cured. Test first before using on other surfaces.
How to use it
Make sure the timber is clean, dry, unpainted, roughened and free of rot. Remove any soft or crumbling material first. Place the amount of filler you need on a clean, flat, non-absorbent surface, such as the plastic over-cap. Add the red hardener in the proportion given on the can, then mix thoroughly until the colour is completely even with no red or white streaks. As a guide from the manufacturer's mixing chart, 100g of filler with 2.5g of hardener gels in about 7 minutes at 22°C. Use less hardener if you need longer working time, particularly in warm weather. Press the mix into the repair with a putty knife or spatula, overfilling slightly. When it reaches the cheese-like stage, trim it to shape with a blade or surform. Allow about 30 to 60 minutes for a full cure, then sand and paint. Mix a small test batch first, because temperature and thickness change the set time.
Important notes
Always follow the mix ratio on the can, because too little or too much hardener can affect the cure. Thick fills set faster than thin ones. Timber will still expand and contract with moisture changes, so good woodworking practice should still be followed around the repair. Mixed material generates heat as it cures. Do not leave mixed product in a pile or sealed container. Close the can tightly after use. Check the can and the supplied instructions for full details.
