HOW TO PREPARE A BATHROOM OR KITCHEN FOR PAINTING The key to achieving a flawless paint finish is preparation. A fresh coat of paint can often accentuate imperfections on plaster walls so it's important that small cracks, dents and chips are properly filled and sanded to create a smooth, even surface for a picture-perfect finish. In areas affected by moisture such as bathrooms, kitchens and laundries we recommend using products specially designed to resist mould growth. Before starting on your walls, it's a good idea to clear your bathroom or kitchen of accessories and appliances. Use good quality drop sheets to avoid getting paint and dust on benchtops, sinks and floor surfaces. You'll need: Poly Sugar Soap Polyfilla Bathroom & Kitchen A flexible filling blade Fine sandpaper A soft brush Painters tape Ensure your walls have no remaining nails, pins, etc. With fine sandpaper, remove lumps, bumps and any paint flakes. Brush off excess dust and then wash down the walls thoroughly with Poly Sugar Soap to remove mould, grease and grime. Let the sugar soap dry completely before filling. Apply a small amount of Polyfilla Bathroom & Kitchen to your filling blade and draw it across each imperfection on the wall. For larger areas, a trowel should be used. Using the filling blade, remove excess and skim the filled areas lightly in both directions a few times to ensure a no air bubbles are present in the filled space. Feathering the edges will also minimise sanding. Finish by drawing down with firm pressure. Wait until the application has dried (2-3 hours for thin 2-3mm applications depending on humidity), then lightly sand the filled areas to an even finish. Remove dust with a soft brush. Allow longer drying times for deeper applications or if painting with oil-based paints (24 hours minimum). There is no need to use water or sugar soap to clean dry filled surfaces prior to painting. For deeper jobs, apply in 10mm layers allowing each layer to set before applying the next layer. Remove contaminants such as dust, dirt, oil and grime with a solvent such as denatured alcohol (ethanol), acetone, rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) or lacquer thinner. Mild detergent solution in water is also good removing contaminants. Use a clean paper towel or rag for wiping. Do not use mineral spirits or paint thinner for removing contaminants. Remove rust and loose paint with sandpaper or wire brush. Epoxy typically sticks to most paints. If there is a concern of the paint’s adhesion then remove it with sandpaper or wire brush. Smooth, glossy and shiny surfaces should be roughened using sandpaper to increase adhesion. How to clean-up after PC-Crete™ application Clean up mixed epoxy before it cures with paper towels and solvent. Denatured alcohol (ethanol), acetone, rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) or lacquer thinner are suitable solvents for removing uncured epoxy. Cured epoxy can be removed with paint stripper or remover. Can PC-Crete™ be used to repair a crack in a fountain? PC-Crete™ looks like concrete and is excellent for repairing concrete fountains, statues and lawn decorations. Will PC-Crete™ adhere to a concrete step? Can it be shaped to match a corner? PC- Crete™ is excellent to repairs on concrete surfaces such as steps. It shapes easily and can be sanded to match the look and texture of the concrete surface. Is PC-Crete™ suitable for filling a small crack or spall in a sidewalk or deck? Small crack repairs in concrete are easily made with or without the use of tools using PC-Crete™. PC-Crete™ is excellent for replacing missing or loose mortar between bricks and stones. Can PC-Crete™ be used in a fish tank or pond? PC-Crete™ is not recommended for aquatic use. Do not use this product in aquariums or ponds. The PC-Crete™ is not easily grabbing or sticking to the concrete surface. It pulls away lifting loose stones The putty wants to stick to the fingers more than the concrete surface. Wet the fingers with alcohol and then press, shape and smooth the applied putty. DUNLOP®WALL TILE ADHESIVE is a ready-mixed indoor wall tile adhesive. Ideal for all types of ceramic wall tiles and dimensional stones such as marble and granite, it can be used on a number of surfaces which include compressed fibre-cement sheets, plasterboard, cement render and adequately prepared painted surfaces (oil-based paint only). DUNLOP®WALL TILE ADHESIVE has superior flexibility and high grab to support even the heaviest of wall tiles. SURFACE PREPARATION Surfaces must be consistently flat and firmly fixed. Clean off dust, oil, grease and all loose contaminating materials or coatings. Ensure surfaces are dry, with no residue or permanent dampness. Prime porous surfaces (e.g. fibre- cement sheets, cement render) with DUNLOP®PRIMER & ADDITIVE beforehand and allow to dry. Cement Render Allow to cure for at least 7 days. Render should have a wood float finish. Plasterboard There is no need to prime the cardboard surface. However, where sheets are joined, DUNLOP®PRIMER & ADDITIVE must be used over the base jointing compound. Do not use the topping compound in areas which are to be tiled. Compressed Fibre-Cement Sheets Remove surface dust with a damp sponge and prime with DUNLOP®PRIMER & ADDITIVE and allow to dry before tiling. Painted Surfaces Oil-based paint should be roughened mechanically and loose flaking paint should be removed. Ensure the paint is suitable for tiling over. Thoroughly remove water-based paints. Do not use paint stripper or solvents. Allow surface to dry after cleaning. MIXING No mixing required. APPLICATION As a general guide use a 6mm notch trowel to spread adhesive achieving a minimum 1mm bed thickness. Do not wet tiles before fixing. If backs of tiles are dusty clean with a damp sponge. Spread the adhesive with the notches running horizontally across the wall. Spread only one square metre at a time and ensure a skin has not developed on the adhesive before bedding tiles. Press and slide the tile into position ensuring the whole of the back of the tile is in good contact with the adhesive. Use tile spacers if desired to ensure even spacing. Remove any surplus adhesive on face of tile or between joints before it sets. Adjustment of tiles should be carried out within 60 minutes of laying (at 23°C and 50% humidity). COVERAGE DUNLOP®WALL TILE ADHESIVE will cover approximately 0.5m2per kg. Coverage will vary depending on the condition of the surface being tiled and application technique. DRYING TIME DUNLOP®WALL TILE ADHESIVE will dry in approximately 24 hours depending on ambient temperature, porosity of surface and tiles. MOVEMENT JOINTS Incorporate movement joints at 3.5m intervals and at internal corners. Any structural movement joints must be carried through to the face of the tiling, at junctions between different background material and at fixtures interrupting the tile surface. These joints should be about 6mm wide and and kept free from adhesive. They should be filled with a high quality flexible material e.g. DUNLOP®COLOURED SILICONE. GROUTING Wait until adhesive has set. This takes approximately 24 hours. Remove tile spacers and use DUNLOP®GROUT adding DUNLOP®PRIMER AND ADDITIVE to enhance colour, impart a degree of flexibility and reduce porosity and staining. For easier maintenance seal with DUNLOP®GROUT SEALER. CLEAN UP While it is still fresh, DUNLOP®WALL TILE ADHESIVE can be cleaned off with a damp sponge. Tools, hands and material soiled with adhesive can be easily cleaned with water as long as the adhesive is still fresh. CAUTION Do not use DUNLOP®WALL TILE ADHESIVE to fix green marble. Concrete Floors Concrete must have a wood float finish and be fully cured (min. 4 weeks). Screeds should be at least 7 days old. Remove sealers, curing compounds, or any laitance by mechanical means. Roughen steel trowel finishes to ensure bonding. Cement Screeded Floors Ensure screeds are properly cured and level, finishing with a wood float. New screeds must cure for at least 7 days before tiling. Compressed Fibre-Cement Sheets Install according to the manufacturer's instructions, ensuring the surface is clean. Priming is recommended. Existing Tiles (indoors only) Ensure tiles are stable and roughen their surfaces by mechanical means, removing at least 80% of the glaze. MIXING Mix the adhesive by adding powder to water. Use approx. 400ml of water per 1kg of powder. Stir to a thick, creamy consistency using a mechanical mixer, let stand for 5 minutes, and re-stir. The mixture is usable for 2.5 hours depending on temperature. APPLICATION Tile installation should comply with AS3958.1 standards. Use a notched trowel (10mm for floors) to apply. Spread adhesive over 1m² sections to avoid skinning before tile bedding. Ensure full coverage by pressing tiles at right angles to the adhesive. Large tiles or those with deep keys may require back buttering. Remove excess adhesive from joints and surfaces before the adhesive sets. Allow at least 24 hours for the adhesive to cure before grouting. DRYING TIMES & GROUTING Grouting can begin after 24 hours at 23°C and 50% humidity. For larger tiles or humid climates, extend drying time. Use DUNLOP COLOURED GROUT or DUNLOP WIDE JOINT GROUT for joints wider than 8mm. MOVEMENT JOINTS Follow AS3958 standards for movement joints. Ensure joints are present at 3–5m intervals and around the perimeter. Keep joints approx. 6mm wide and fill with a flexible material like DUNLOP COLOURED SILICONE.
